Sung Hoon Kang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics at Harvard University and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT and Seoul National University, respectively. Sung Hoon has been investigating bioinspired solutions to address the current challenges in engineering materials and mechanical systems with applications including safety, healthcare, sensing, and energy. His research has been supported by AFOSR, NSF, NIH, ARO, ONR, State of Maryland, and private foundations.
Throughout his career, Sung Hoon has co-authored 54 peer-reviewed papers, has given ~150 presentations (including ~80 invited talks), and has six patents and three pending patents. His honors include 2021, 2020 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship, 2020 Johns Hopkins University Catalyst Award, 2019 Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering Research Lab Excellence Award, Invitee for 2019 China-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, FY 2018 Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program Award, Alumnus of 2016 National Academy of Engineering US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, and 2011 Materials Research Society Graduate Students Gold Award.
He serves research community in various roles, including editorial board member, journal reviewer, proposal reviewer, technical committee member, and conference organizer. He served as an editorial board member of Scientific Reports and a guest editor of February 2016 issue of Materials Research Society Bulletin. Currently, he serves as an early career researcher board member of Multifunctional Materials and an editorial board member of Sensor. He also serves as a reviewer for journals including Nature, Science, Advanced Materials, Science Advances, Science Robotics, Advanced Functional Materials, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, ACS Materials & Interfaces, Nanoscale, Additive Manufacturing, Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Extreme Mechanics Letters, Soft Matter, Smart Materials and Structures, Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, and Advanced Materials Technologies and funding agencies/programs including National Science Foundation, Army Research Office, American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, Fonds de recherche du Quebec, Dutch Research Council, and Agency for Science, Technology and Research. He has been co-organizing ~35 symposia on bioinspired materials, 3D printing, and mechanical metamaterials at international conferences.
He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Physical Society (APS), Materials Research Society (MRS), and Society of Engineering Science (SES). He served as the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Editor of ASME Technical Committee on Mechanics of Soft Materials.

Mechanical Engineering
I am currently pursuing a master’s in mechanical engineering with a focus in biomechanics. Over the years through working on projects such as gecko inspired adhesives and self-expanding heart valves, I’ve developed skills in offering innovative solutions, rapid prototyping, bio-inspired mechanical design. My research interest lies in bio-inspired solutions for mechanical problems with a focus in medical devices design.
Yihe (Ethan) Wang
Mechanical Engineering
I am currently a master of science student in mechanical engineering. With my interest in mechanics, mechanical design, numerical simulation and topological optimization, I work on research topic in the relevant fields.
Yanwen (Evan) Liu
Mechanical Engineering
I am a master of science student studying mechnical engineering. My research interests are mechanical design in medical device field, and additive manufracturing.
Julia (Lia) Xia
Mechanical Engineering
I am a first year MSE in ME with a focus on structural mechanics and design, particularly for biomedical applications. My current research interests are mostly 3D printed medical devices

Jaeho Lee
Mechanical Engineering
I am a senior in the Mechanical Engineering department. My current research interests are focused on 3D printing, especially as it pertains to design of medical devices and aerospace applications. I am currently working on a joint project with the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Washington University’s School of Medicine to develop a sutureless nerve anastomosis device with drug delivery capabilities. Additionally, I am collaborating with the Air Force Research Lab to develop articulating structures using 3D printed metamaterials. In my free time I enjoy playing basketball and soccer. I am also a member of the club handball team and WJHU, the Hopkins student radio. My favorite place to spend time is at the beach back home in North Carolina!
